  • CT scan

A Computed Tomography, called a CT Scan, is an X-ray that generates a variety of cross sectional images, providing a detailed view of a particular area in the body. It is one of the best and fastest tools for examining the chest, abdomen and pelvis. With a CT scan, you can see even the smallest bones and the tissue, blood vessels and muscles surrounding them.

  • MRI

Magnetic resonance imaging, also known as an MRI, creates a comprehensive view of the internal body in narrow layers. The scan is performed with a powerful magnet, radio waves and a computer that takes magnified pictures for evaluation. An MRI is often the preferred exam for analyzing the spinal cord, pelvis, brain and extremities such as tendons and ligaments. It can detect tiny changes in body structures and is used to diagnose injuries and diseases related to the vascular system, heart, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, pancreas and other vital organs.

  • PET/CT scan

A PET/CT scan is a combination of positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) exam. PET detects abnormal biochemistry or disease while CT pinpoints location. The test is primarily used to diagnose cancer and evaluate its response to treatment.

Because changes in biochemistry occur before a tumor forms. PET scans can often identify disease earlier than other tests that search for the presence of a tumor. PET scans require a radioactive glucose injection to measure metabolic activity. The scanner detects the radiation while the computer generates three-dimensional /Style%20Library/img of tissue function or cell activity. Since cancer cells grow faster and use glucose at a much higher rate than normal cells, they are easily detected using a PET scan.

  • Digital mammography

Digital mammography machines use X-ray technology to create /Style%20Library/img of the breast. They produce superior picture quality with less radiation than traditional film mammography, and allow the radiologist to manipulate the size, orientation, brightness and contrast of the /Style%20Library/img. Digital mammography accurately detects breast cancer in women under the age of 50 and/or with dense breasts, as well as in premenopausal and perimenopausal women. When reviewing digital mammograms, our radiologists use computer-aided detection (CAD), successful in identifying cancer at earlier stages, when it is most treatable.

  • Digital X-ray

An X-ray (radiograph) is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. Imaging with X-rays involves exposing a part of the body to a small dose of ionizing radiation to produce pictures of the inside of the body. X-rays are the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging and a bone X-ray makes /Style%20Library/img of any bone in the body.

  • Ultrasound

An ultrasound, also called a sonogram, uses high frequency sound waves beyond the range of human hearing to view the inside of the body. These sound waves record and send echoes to a computer, which generates a video image. While other diagnostic tests evaluate hard tissues, an ultrasound detects soft tissues, such as the pelvic organs and fetus, gallbladder, pancreas, liver, stomach and kidneys.

  • Bone density (DEXA scan)

Bone Density scans used to help diagnose osteoporosis, an illness that causes bones to become brittle and break easily. The condition can be prevented and treated if a Bone Density Scan detects bone loss in time.

  • Fluoroscopy studies

Fluoroscopy is a study of moving body structures - similar to an x-ray "movie." A continuous x-ray beam is passed through the body part being examined. The beam is transmitted to a TV-like monitor so that the body part and its motion can be seen in detail. Fluoroscopy, as an imaging tool, enables physicians to look at many body systems, including the skeletal, digestive, urinary, respiratory, and reproductive systems.

Fluoroscopy may be performed to evaluate specific areas of the body, including the bones, muscles, and joints, as well as solid organs such as the heart, lung, or kidneys.

  • Laboratory services

Our diagnostic centers offer a full array of laboratory tests for patients with a doctor's prescription.

Radiation Safety

As with other medical procedures, CT scans, X-rays, mammograms and other tests that require radiation are safe when used with care. Baptist Health takes every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of our patients.

Our radiologists and technologists have been trained to use the minimal amount of radiation necessary to obtain the needed results, whether for a mammogram, CT scan or simple X-ray. The amount of radiation used in most examinations is very small and the benefits greatly outweigh the risk of harm.
